The Most Shorted Stocks in Each Sector

Investors have placed big bets that the shares of these companies are going to fall in the coming months.

Since the election on Nov. 8, the S&P 500 is up 3 percent, while the S&P 1500 is up about 4 percent. Despite the uptick, there are stocks that investors are placing big bets are going to fall.

As advisors do their year-end portfolio reviews and evaluate the outlook for 2017, they can glean a lot by looking at the most heavily shorted areas of the market. Currently, the most heavily shorted sector is energy, followed by consumer discretionary and health care, according to an analysis by Bespoke Investment Group.

Bespoke recently ranked the five most shorted stocks in each sector of the S&P 1500, which includes large caps, mid caps and small caps. Here, we highlight the most shorted in each sector.
