Ameriprise Financial recently forged an unusual alliance — with pop psychologist and self-help guru Dr. Phil. During a three-part series called “The First Wives' Club” the talk show host offered newly divorced women gifts from a number of firms, including Ameriprise, aimed at helping them achieve financial independence. Ameriprise will provide four women with five years of one-on-one financial advisory services. It's not a bad marketing move. Today, almost half of all marriages end in divorce. Meanwhile, women are earning $1 trillion annually and make up 59 percent of the labor force, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
